DHL Adds Six Healthcare Corridors to Close the U.S.-Asia Cold Chain Gap

DHL Group announced on October 12 that it is expanding its Cold Chain Network with six new dedicated healthcare corridors connecting Europe and North America to Asia, part of a sustained buildout of temperature-controlled logistics for pharmaceuticals, vaccines and biologics. The expansion, announced through DHL's global press center, is designed to give shippers direct access to key pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and distribution hubs across Asia and to strengthen end-to-end capacity for high-value healthcare cargo, spanning production through final delivery.

The corridors build on a wave of investment that has accelerated since April 2025, when DHL committed 2 billion euros to Life Sciences & Healthcare logistics by 2030 under the DHL Health Logistics brand, with 50 percent of the funds allocated to the Americas. The program sits under DHL's Strategy 2030, which identifies life sciences and healthcare as a global growth pillar supporting the group's goal of increasing revenue 50 percent by 2030. In February 2026, the group expanded its dedicated airfreight cold chain network with a Brussels–Cincinnati corridor supported by a newly branded Boeing 777 freighter, tying together the U.S. Midwest, home to leading pharma companies, and Europe's life-sciences ecosystems. The new six-corridor expansion extends that logic eastward, connecting those networks to Asian manufacturing and research hubs, with more than 30 GDP-compliant aviation hubs and gateways now serving the network, per the group's February release.

Infrastructure in the pipeline

The capacity build in Asia Pacific is concrete. DHL Global Forwarding is developing the Singapore Coldchain Hub, a dedicated healthcare logistics facility within Changi's 24/7 Free Trade Zone, with an investment of S$22 million (about 15 million euros). The facility will provide 3,047 square meters of GDP-aligned temperature-controlled space for pharmaceuticals, vaccines and biologics, with dedicated 2°C-to-8°C and 15°C-to-25°C handling environments, and is slated to launch in late 2027. DHL Supply Chain, meanwhile, is adding a second Pharma Hub in Singapore — a S$7 million facility spanning more than 8,000 square meters with roughly 7,680 pallet positions and GDP-compliant, GMP-aligned infrastructure, expected to begin operations in the first half of 2027 — bringing its total pharmaceutical logistics footprint in the city-state to about 16,000 square meters. DHL Express has also installed its first GDP-compliant healthcare handling space at its South Asia Hub at Changi Airport, a controlled ambient room in the 15°C-to-25°C range.

The Singapore program is part of a global pattern. DHL has built a specialized pharma facility in Florstadt, Germany, invested 40 million euros in an automated life-sciences site in Auckland, New Zealand, and is spending R$100 million (about 17 million euros) on healthcare supply chain infrastructure in Brazil. In North America, DHL Supply Chain completed a one-million-square-foot life sciences and healthcare Center of Excellence in Annville, Pennsylvania, designated as a Foreign Trade Zone and scheduled to open this year.

Why the corridor math matters

The market context explains the urgency. The Asia Pacific healthcare cold chain logistics market is forecast to reach USD 42.5 billion by 2031, according to industry estimates cited by DHL, and U.S. pharmaceutical logistics is growing at an annual rate of about 8 percent. DHL's network now spans more than 220 countries and territories, supported by over 250 GDP-qualified warehouses in 43 countries. The company has also acquired CRYOPDP, a specialty courier for clinical trials, biopharmaceuticals and advanced therapies that operates in 15 countries directly and in more than 135 through certified partners — serving more than three million patients a year with temperature-controlled, door-to-door solutions — and SDS Rx, a North American final-mile healthcare delivery provider serving more than 200 U.S. locations. For visibility, DHL built LifeTrack, an in-house application providing real-time condition monitoring for temperature, humidity and shock on life-sciences shipments.

The operational logic of dedicated corridors is straightforward: by reducing reliance on third-party carriers and commercial airlines, DHL improves temperature integrity and visibility while shielding shippers from capacity shortages and geopolitical disruption, as the group's February announcement made explicit. "Life sciences and healthcare companies expect cold chain solutions that are reliable, compliant, and transparent from end to end — and those expectations are rising fast," said Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight, at the time. The company's Singapore leadership repeated the point in September when announcing the Coldchain Hub: "A temperature excursion of just a few degrees can compromise the integrity of high-value medicines," said Praveen Gregory, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

For pharmaceutical manufacturers, biotech firms and healthcare shippers moving product across the Pacific, the practical effect is a shorter, more controlled route for temperature-sensitive cargo, with fewer handoffs and more predictable transit. The corridors also respond to a structural shift in where medicines are made: as advanced therapies and biologics scale, production and clinical capacity is spreading across Asia, and the logistics networks that carry those therapies are being rebuilt to match. The six new corridors will be followed by more — the Asia Pacific buildout is, by DHL's own timeline, a multi-year program running toward 2030.
